Many performances have been affected during coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. As a “center for the arts, arts for the people,” National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) aims to keep performances going. General and Artistic Director CHIEN Wen-pin is initiating the “Music Playing of Musical Offering” project, which centers around Musical Offering (BWV1079) by Johann Sebastian BACH, hoping to inspire cohesion throughout the performing arts and positivity among the people.
The music of BACH is filled with grace and order; the musical form and structure of Musical Offering, a masterpiece which was composed during his later years, seems simple at first glance but is, in truth, extremely complex. Musical Offering extends an infinite series of canons from the original theme, a quality that coincides with the temperament of the digital age.
Through the digital technology, musicians are able to present their performance, even though not performing on stage; it too frees the audience from the limitation of space and time, giving us the opportunity to explore various forms of the performing arts.
